Wendell E. Smith, 80, of Rockford, died Friday, October 6, 2023, in Rockford. Born March 15, 1943, in Rockford, IL, the son of Carroll F. and Irene V. (Carlson) Smith. He married Penelope “Penny” Apgar; she predeceased him June 11, 2009. Wendell was the owner of Valley Countertops. His passion was creating things and he loved working with his hands. Wendell was an expert problem solver a “Superman”. He was very family oriented and cherished all of his family and friends. One of his favorite sayings was “to have good friends you have to be a good friend”.
Wendell is survived by his daughters, Shari (Chuck) Siracusa and Suzanne Myers; grandchildren, Tony (Ashlei) Siracusa, Zachary Myers and Alyssa (Richard) Gartman; great-grandchild, Leo Siracusa; Significant other, Joan Backer; brother, Carroll “Gene” Smith; sisters, Darlene (Ronald) Catalani, and Kathryn (Gail) Anderson; brothers-in-law, Doug Simler, and Robert (Jeanne) Apgar; sisters-in-law, Sharon Smith, and Pat (James) Tucker and several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Predeceased by his wife, Penny; parents; brother, Burdette Smith; sister, Barbara Simler; infant sister, Carolyn; father and mother-in-law Earl and Pauline Apgar.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023, at Olson North Main Chapel, 2811 N. Main St., Rockford. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service.
