Obituary

Charles V. Manning of Madisonville, TN. Passed away at Ben Atchley State Veteran’s Home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra K. Manning, parents; Virgil and Dorothy Manning; sister, Marcia Sauer; in-laws, Harold, and Alice (Kirby) Hawkinson; and brother-in-law, Meredith Ratcliff. Charles was born in Rockford, Illinois on May 23, 1944. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii and San Antonio, Texas. Upon his military discharge he worked for Rockford products and Village pharmacy many years before relocating to Spring Hill, Florida. After retiring to east Tennessee near the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains he was the biggest fan for his grandchildren and all their many extracurricular activities. There were few sporting events, band competitions, or various performances missed over the years. Charles was not a man of many words, but prior to illness he made sure everyone knew how important his family was to him. He had a beautiful (and sometimes cocky smile, combined with an eye roll), sparkling blue eyes, a genuine kindness, and love of sports- (Chicago Cubs even if it was “like watching paint dry at times,” UT girls’ basketball, Atlanta Braves, and McMinn Central basketball), Doo Wop music, and word searches. He will be sorely missed by his children, Amy (Jerry Riggs Jr), and Jeff (Sue) Manning; grandchildren, “Hey Hey we’re the Riggs kids;” Kassie (Cory) Mathews, Jeremy Riggs, Kaitlin (Treavor) Johnson, Kristen Riggs (Ethan Layman), and Madison Manning. He was “Bomps” to Everly and Camden Mathews whom he treasured and shared his mini lollipops and cotton candy. Also left to keep his memory are siblings; Susan Kroll, Jill (Craig) Lawler, David (Beth) Manning, Bruce (Shelli) Manning, Leann (Jeff) Dobbs, and Tina (Dave) St. Vincent; sister-in-law, Linnea Ratcliff, brother-in-law, Chris Sauer, Harold (Kim) Hawkinson Jr. along with a host of extended family and friends. The family would like to thank Encompass Home Health, Etowah Healthcare, and Ben Atchley TSVH staff for the care and compassion shown over the last three years. A private graveside will be held at a later date. You are invited to extend your condolences or share a memory of Charles on his webpage located at www.companionfuenrals.com Companion Funeral Home of Athens and the Cody family are honored to assist the family with these arrangements.
